Hello from London!
As we move deeper into the quagmire of the war in Ukraine, we hear of the real reasons the sanctions are working. With 2000+ civilian deaths to date and rising, this is a war on multiple fronts: ground warfare, solid PR positioning, disinformation and the press, a new online iron curtain and, of course, nuclear deterrence. With a massive 1.2M exodus (supposedly rising to 4M refugees very soon), we're also seeing a sort of humanitarian apartheid while other commentators and refugees see double standards in Europe's embrace of Ukrainians.
From a technology standpoint, the internet is a force multiplier for Ukraine and there are multiple ways that tech is being used in Ukraine from internet lockdowns, to the Russian Splinternet, to open-source intelligence, to NFTs and crypto funding. We are also seeing sides being drawn with the Chinese Internet siding mostly as Pro-Putin. As we binge-watch this war, how will this play out over the coming weeks? Will it structurally change Europe? And where will it end? Will it? We were perilously close to a Nuclear disaster but in the period of one week, the Russian economy has been cut off from the rest of the world. That's going to mean more inflationary pressure for all of us - but a disastrous situation for Russia which will take decades to come back from. The end game can only be at the negotiation table or with a change at the top.
Yuval Noal Harari's Why Vladimir Putin has already lost this war and Project Syndicate's Onpoint are the articles you must read - and articulates this watershed moment for Europe, Russia and the world. And if you are podcast inclined, the BBC's Ukrainecast is excellent.
