Post Deltacron
Editor's Note
Hello from London!
In years to come, we will look back on Ukraine and know that we didn't do enough. This week I point you to some background reading on Ukraine, Russia and the West, a piece on What Russian Officials Think of the Invasion of Ukraine, and the war that Russians do not see. Other related reading includes An expert on Stalin discusses Putin, Russia, and the West, source researchers went viral unpacking the war in Ukraine, should Putin be preparing for defeat, and The Myth of the ‘First TikTok War’.
Just when you had forgot about the pandemic, deltacron (delta+omicron) rears its Covid head. In a piece the preceded the news, The Atlantic details how Covid plays out:
Not all variants, though, are built the same. The next one to trouble us could be like Delta, speedy and a shade more severe yet still trounceable with existing vaccines. It could riff on Omicron’s motif, eluding the defenses raised by infections and shots to an extent we’ve not yet seen. It could merge the worst aspects of both of those predecessors, or find its own successful combo of traits.
It's clear that this will continue (How many times have you heard "we need to learn to live with it") but it's not clear that this recombinant variant will be more transmissable - but this is the shape of things to come. In fact, while cases appear to be rising (here in the UK at least), there are more deaths from old school influenza than Covid-19. Things may be easing up. I still wear my mask, but also so I don't have to awkwardly speak to people in the supermarket.
