Privacy of your Personal Thoughts
Editor's Note
Hello from London!
Many moons ago, some point last century when I was studying for my undergrad, I had a module called HCI or Human-Computer Interaction. It was essentially the study of user interfaces and what was most logical in designing for users. These days HCI is more of an addiction game, with designers trying to hack dopamine out of you to keep you locked into their app, product or site.
HCI has moved on and we are starting to herald new eras. One specifically - with the brain. Much of this was brought to public prominence by Elon Musk's Neurolink and aims for human clinical trials by the end of the year. But there are other companies in this space that are coming to prominence:
Oxley is the founder and CEO of Synchron, a company creating a brain-computer interface, or BCI. These devices work by eavesdropping on the signals emanating from your brain and converting them into commands that then enact a movement, like moving a robotic arm or a cursor on a screen. The implant essentially acts as an intermediary between mind and computer.
The interesting thing for me, as we move forward with the interaction between brain and device is the interface between them both. How will this machine to human connection be established? Will it be electrodes, ESP, or an implantable of some sort? But the main question will become the data of human thought, the privacy of it, and how long we will have access to it. If you thought it today, do you belive in it tomorrow? If you think data is complicated enough, it's this new world 50 years from now the scares me more.
