Schooling Oneself
Editor's Note
Hello from London!
As we amble towards the last quarter of the year, schools and universities around the northern hemisphere have just returned and are soon starting the academic year. I take this as a reminder to check up on my learning for the year and what I'm committed to with my personal development. If we are going to grow our minds, we need to commit to anything from reading to pushing ourselves to new experiences. I like to commit to a range of active and passive courses, and whether your employer supports your life-long learning, you should try and put 1% of your annual salary towards your growth.
This year I'm considering MindValley, Masterclass and maybe a course from IdeoU. Back in the day, personal development used to be a specific course at a place in time, usually in a crusty classroom, but now education is unlimited no matter where you are in the world. So you can school up no matter what you want to do.
Others you may wish to explore include the usual suspects of Skillshare and Udemy where you can pick a heap of workplace skills. And you can pick up courses from some of the best universities in the world from Coursera, Futurelearn or EdX, but also directly from Harvard, Harvard Business School or MIT, for example. Class Central is a good search engine to find what ever you need no matter the provider.
If you need to build your tech skills, try Pluralsight, Section4, Udacity, Datacamp, Codeacademy, Treehouse and Simplilearn.
Prices range from free to all access for a monthly fee to thousands for a course. Ultimately, you're picking education for a reason - to learn something new - to pimp your brain - and to enrich your own world.
