Hello from London!

Welcome to my new readers - as well as the diehards! This week has been all about the layoffs, linked to the economic outlook. We're seeing the peak of it in the tech industry, with Amazon, Stripe, Lyft, Alphabet and others stalling or cutting their workforce. It's been up and down this year governed by the geopolitical situation, inflation and recessionary factors. It signals a pause in the economy, a reset. We've seen covid darlings rise in prominence while falling back quite drastically. Valuations are dropping and I can foresee difficulty in raising. It's going to be a difficult 12 months. We're on a break. Who's going to be brave to go after growth at this time?

The big layoff highlight of the week is Twitter. And to understand Elon's new strategy, what just went down, I recommend these articles:

This is a wider story. Whatever has happened may leave Twitter open for more hate speech despite Musk's protests. And just before US elections, this might be a great opportunity for those wanting to share misinformation. Either way, companies have started pulling back on advertising on the platform. Interesting times ahead. Expect more trauma through the end of the year before a sort of rebirth of the brand. Elon Musk doesn't like to fail - and this might become a reenvisioning of speech. In the meantime, we're on a break.

When people talk about “managing up”, sometimes it’s framed as a bad thing – massaging the ego of people in charge so that they treat you well. In my experience, managing up is usually a lot more practical. Your manager doesn’t (and can’t!) know every single detail about what you do in your job, and being aware of what they might not know and giving them the information they need to do their job well makes everyone’s job a lot easier.

In a world of choices, it’s impossible to avoid regret. Unpleasant as it is, you can make it bearable, even inspirational
