There’s a story every meeting tells itself. The one where nobody asked the second question. A credit algorithm once offered women lower limits than men with identical profiles. The code was flawless but the data wasn’t. Nobody asked who defined “creditworthiness.” The fallout cost millions and trust. If you search you’ll find out who it is.
This is called speed without curiosity.
And it’s everywhere now. Someone asks ChatGPT a question. They immediately get a clean answer. They copy it. Move on. Meeting over. Decision made.
The formatting is perfect. The logic flows. But nobody asked the second question. Nobody pulled the thread. Nobody wondered if the premise was wrong. People assume that everything was right, that everything was checked, that there was a human in the loop, at the very least.
That’s no longer guaranteed.
AI accelerates whatever mindset you bring and that sentence should scare anyone moving fast. If you bring certainty, you'll be confidently wrong at scale. If you bring curiosity, it will multiply your reach.
That’s the real divide I think we are seeing. It’s not between humans and machines, but between those who still ask questions and those who outsource them. It’s between those who are actually curious and those who just say they are. And no-one says that they are not curious.
The smartest people I know share one maddening habit: they keep asking when everyone else has stopped. They continue asking questions after the meeting ends. It also makes them right more often. They play devils advocate. The get as much clarity as possible. They replay back, so they can understand that they know what you know. They also want to know what you don’t know so they fill in the gaps.
Curiosity is about staying alive when your industry moves faster than your job description. Or when the world is moving faster than you have ever seen. That time is now and it’s not stopping.
AI has made it brutally clear: machines write, code, summarise, and predict better than most humans now, most of the time. They pattern-match across oceans of data. They generate answers on demand. They think with direction.
What they cannot do is wonder. They cannot feel the itch of a missing piece. They cannot sit with a knot of uncertainty and pull the thread. They don’t really pause for reflection, even when they say they are thinking longer.
That gap between answering and wondering is where humans win. Or lose. Every breakthrough, every act of progress, begins with someone refusing to accept the first answer.
Curiosity isn’t a personality quirk. It’s your operating system and why your brain perks up. When your interest is genuinely piqued, your brain’s reward system activates. A 2023 neuroscience study at UC Davis showed that curiosity triggers the same dopamine pathways as anticipation of reward. That small spark of wanting to know lights up the same neural circuits as anticipation, pleasure, and reward. Memory improves. Learning accelerates, and you retain more because you care about the question, not just the answer.
In early education, higher curiosity predicts better reading and maths scores later, even when you control for socioeconomic factors. Give a child permission to explore and performance rises. The pattern holds for adults. Curious people upskill without being told. They learn something daily. Active learning, not quarterly training courses. They search, test and share. Teams with this habit move faster because they actually enjoy catching up. They’re not staying relevant because the world is changing. What they are doing is they’re hunting for what’s next. That’s what curious minds are all about.
Inside companies, teams, and larger groups, the effect will compound. Teams that question assumptions avoid the expensive error of solving the wrong problem. Leaders who model curiosity reduce groupthink and surface risk early. Sharing broader amongst teams restricts assumptions and focuses teams and success.
Satya Nadella’s pivot at Microsoft is now folklore: he moved the organisation from “know it all” to “learn it all.” He didn’t add perks or reorganise divisions. He raised the status of good questions. That single shift made space for new products, better partnerships, and a culture where people could admit what they didn’t know, which is where real learning starts. I’d go one stage further. Knowing what your colleague doesn’t know to understand how they came to their recommendation and conclusion.
AI changes the game in one crucial way: it supplies plausible answers on demand. This creates a very dangerous reflex. We accept the first draft because it looks tidy. It has bullet points. It sounds authoritative.
Curiosity fixes this. It slows the reflex to accept and speeds the search for better framing. Do we have the right data? The right lens? The right objective? Is this the actual problem? Curiosity turns AI from a vending machine into a laboratory instrument.
A curious analyst pushes a model against counterexamples before showing a forecast. A curious marketer tries five alternative prompts to surface non-obvious audience insights. A curious product team runs two small,cheap experiments rather than one grand bet. The pattern is identical each time: curiosity improves the quality of the question, which improves the quality of the answer.
We tell ourselves myths about curiosity: that it’s optional, unmeasurable, innate, or dangerous. Curiosity moves numbers. Cultures that protect inquiry make fewer decision errors and ship more useful ideas, and employers now place curiosity near the top of demanded skills because it’s a survival skill, not a nice-to-have. I call it a SuperSkill, and it’s my first SuperSkill that I talk about in my forthcoming book.
You can measure it through behaviours like questions logged, ideas proposed, experiments run, and cross-functional moves made. Reward them and people grow. Incentivise curiosity and you build the curiosity muscle and you make it normal. Incentivise it and people ask that second question. Everyone starts curious, then fear and rigid environments shut it down. Remove those blockers and curiosity returns. Reckless curiosity is risky, but managed curiosity lowers risk by finding flaws earlier and exposing second-order effects.
In strategy: Curiosity stops you copying the category leader by default. It pushes you toward non-consensus truths. It turns competitor analysis into competitor archaeology. You find what others missed because you stayed with the question longer, because you refused to accept the obvious reading, because you kept pulling at the thread everyone else dismissed as irrelevant.
In creativity: Breakthroughs begin as anomalies. In 1995, a team at Pixar noticed a rendering glitch that turned a toy’s polished surface into rough plastic. Instead of deleting it, they studied it and it became the signature texture of Toy Story. Curious teams treat accidents as clues, not detours. They catalogue anomalies because they know every error hides a new option.
In ethics: Curiosity is the start of moral reasoning. It makes you ask whose perspective is missing, what the model optimises for, what the side effects might be over time. In AI work, that habit catches bias and perverse incentives before they scale.
In culture: I once worked with a team that launched features by tradition, a quarterly ritual that looked efficient. Ship, present, celebrate. Revenue bumped along but the product felt tired. We introduced two simple practices: an anomaly round every week where each person shared one odd metric or user story, and a pilot rule that forced every new idea to run on a small, live test before it made the roadmap. Within one OKR cycle they killed two sacred features and doubled down on a boring but stable workflow that users loved. The shift? Better questions, asked sooner.
Treat curiosity like capital and you get compounding returns:
Better framing → fewer wasted cycles
More experiments → faster discovery
Wider perspective → safer decisions
Higher engagement → lower churn
Continuous learning → sustained relevance
Each feeds the next. Over a year, the gap between curious teams and incurious teams shows in product quality, customer trust, and financial resilience.
What You Can Do This Week
In one firm I worked with, they replaced weekly status reports with learning reports. Three questions only: What surprised us? What did we test? What do we believe differently now? It took six weeks for people to stop gaming it with fake insights. By month three, the quality of their product decisions had improved because they’d made inquiry a ritual instead of an accident.
You can start simpler.
If you lead a team:
Start key reviews with “what we learned” and “what surprised us.” Make discovery equal in status to delivery
Ring-fence an afternoon for exploration. It beats the annual hack day
Promote people who surface unknowns early
If you’re an individual contributor:
Keep a question log and turn the best into micro-tests you can run by Friday
When AI gives an answer, ask it for three counter-cases, then test them
The real accelerant is this: you need a question you cannot shake and a small test you can run by end of the week. Do that every week, share what you learn, and the culture around you will start to change. The work will feel different. So will the results.
The Only Moat
Curiosity will save you from the worst mistakes.
It will keep you learning when others stall. It will keep your ethics honest when speed tempts shortcuts. In a world of fast answers, the rarest thing is a better question.
Build your week around that and you keep your edge, your integrity, and your humanity.
The alternative is drift: letting algorithms, conventions, and first-draft answers shape your trajectory.
The choice between drift and design starts with a single question: What am I not asking?
Answer that by this coming Friday. Ask it again next week. Keep asking until the habit outlives the tool. That’s how you build a moat that lasts.
A moat, if you do it right, isn’t around your business. It’s around your mind.
