Friends,
I’m coming close to 30 years “working” - I may be a little long in the tooth, but I like to think that I gained some wisdom at some point. As we move to this new AI age, I’d like to be upfront - I’m a little worried. It’s going to take new muscles of thinking to get through the last ten years of “work”.
Wisdom is what you have picked up through experience, but what I have been realising recently is that it’s also important to unlearn some areas. What we once held to be true no longer is guaranteed. I once had a side-hustle content business. It was funded through Google Adsense and was a money-making machine. At the time, I thought I was a genius - but in hindsight, I was mostly a little lucky, had good timing, and was a bit of a nerd. I also hustled. If I had the time again, I’d repeat it. But in this day and age - this business would be dead from day 1. The experience that I had opened up lots of doors for me and I grew wisdom, but today that experience needs to be unlearned.
If you've been successful in your career, you may be feeling complacent. You may think you've arrived and you don't need to learn anything new. But this is a dangerous mindset. The world is changing rapidly, and if you don't keep up, you'll be left behind.
What I have figured out from peers are that the most successful people in the later years of their careers are lifelong learners - and they know when to unlearn. They're also willing to make mistakes because they know that's how you learn. This combination of learning, unlearning and trying new things is how we advance.
Here are some specific tips as you advance through your career:
Be a lifelong learner. Never stop learning new things. The world is changing rapidly, and you need to keep up if you want to stay relevant.
Build a strong network. Surround yourself with people who can help you stay up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies.
Be willing to make mistakes. Don't be afraid to take risks and try new things. You'll learn more from your mistakes than from your successes.
Use your skills to help others. Find ways to use your skills and experience to make a difference in the world.
The trick is that you don’t need to know everything - but you need a healthy level of obsession around betterment.
Stay Curious - and don’t forget to be amazing,
